Dial Up Networking:

Open the icon named My
Computer (double click it). It should be located on your desktop
in the upper left hand corner.

In that window their will be a folder icon of Dial
Up Networking. Double click it to open it.

In the Dial Up Networking window will be the icons Make New Connection
and an icon for your internet provider.

If when you opened the Dial Up Networking folder a Wizard appeared, go
ahead and run thru the program and click on the finished button when done.
Proceed to the next step.

Click on your internet provider's icon once in order to highlight it.

Pull Down the menu File and select Properties
-
The window now opened contains the Phone Number and the Modem that you
are using.

Make sure the phone number is correct.
-
Make sure the modem specified is the type of modem that you have.
-
Click on the Server
Type button.
-
The window should contain the following:
-
PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet
-
Only Enable Software Compressiong and TCP/IP should be checked off.

Click on the TCP/IP
Settings button
-
The windows should contain the following:
-
Server Assigned IP Address should have a dot beside it.
-
Specify Name Server Addresses should have a dot beside it.
-
Primary DNS is 206.74.254.2
-
Secondary DNS is 204.116.57.2
-
Both IP Header Compression and Use Default Gateway on remote network should
be checked
-
Click on OK
-
Click on the next OK
-
You should be back to properties window with the Phone number and Modem
Type (Connect using:)

Click on Configure.
- This will configure the modem for your internet dialup only.

Normally you should NOT need to configure this,

General Tab:
-
Check the Maximum Speed. This should be greater than you modem speed. Most
modems are set to 57600. This speed adjustment can improve connections
by raising or lowering this value.

Volume - Set it to whatever you like.
-
Connection Tab:
-
Data Bits: 8
-
Parity: None
-
Stop Bits: 1
-
Wait for dial tone before dialing should be checked
-
Cancel the call if not connected with 60 seconds should be check. Make
sure the value is 60 or greater.

Click on the Port
Settings button.

Use FIFO buffer should be checked
-
The Receive Buffer: The slider bar should be on the 3rd dot from the right.

The Transmit Buffer: The slider bar should be all the way to the right
(4th dot from right).

Click OK
-
Click on the Advanced
button
-
Use error control, Compress Data, Use Flow Control, Hardware (RTS/CTS)
should be checked. **Note: Not all modems have this capability. Just check
what is available (not greyed out).

Modulation should be set to Standard.
-
Extra Settings should be blank (unless you have put in a modem initialization
string manually).

Click OK
-
Options Tab:
-
Display modem status should be checked.

You can dial in manually for testing purposes by checking off bring up
terminal window after dialing. Normally this is not necessary.

Click OK
Click OK - You have now completed checking dial up networking.
